Joan, a vibrant local artist from Victoria, has been a loyal Taking Shape fan for more than 30 years. As someone who truly understands our brand and embodies the spirit of our community, this partnership feels like a natural fit. Together, we’re bringing Joan’s expressive, joy-filled prints to life through key pieces designed to uplift and inspire every moment.
Meet Joan Blond.
I am a Melbourne based, abstract expressionist artist, who has lived both in the Yarra Valley and Phillip Island. My work is heavily influenced by my beautiful rural surroundings, connection to the land and positive energy. I find great fulfilment in delivering work that brings about emotions of happiness and excitement to those whom own and view my art.
For me, my work is a journey, ever evolving with continuous growth. I am blessed to share my stories and to evoke emotion through each and every piece.

What is your connection to Taking Shape?
I started wearing Taking Shape clothing about 30 years ago. I was a curvy woman with 3 young children and I wanted clothes that were comfortable to wear and actually fitted my body shape, but were still good quality and fashionable and stylish. I discovered Taking Shape offered a wide range of outfit options from everyday wear to special occasion dresses that focused on comfort, quality and inclusivity and this was perfect for me.
Tell us about the design inspiration for these prints?
My design inspiration for these colourful prints stems from my surroundings in the Australian landscape, particularly from living in the Yarra Valley in Victoria and now at Phillip Island, and the flora and botanical imagery of Australia which I depict as metaphors for a diverse, rich and fulfilling life.
What does this collaboration mean for you?
This collaboration has allowed me to showcase my art to a new audience and explore new creative avenues. It’s the perfect fusion for me mixing my love of art with my love of fashion and when it is being depicted on the clothing brand I love and I wear every day it lights me up!
Tell us about your creative process.
The bulk of my painting in recent times has been me creating paintings that have been commissioned so I have a particular brief to work with. I start with the colour palette that I know will be in the painting and basically start by creating background shapes and colours. Usually there are a couple of layers of colour applied with me mixing and creating different shades of colour. Once dry I then decorate the background bringing in floral aspects and leaves and made up plants to create the artwork.
How will you style this collection?
I wear a lot of smart casual clothing mostly (except when I’m in my TS t-shirts and leggings spattered in paint). I love the jacket so much and it looks fabulous over plain black paints and a plain top. I also think it will look great over a white tee shirt and white pants. The dress will be perfect for going out for lunch or dinner and it’s a versatile dress that can easily go from day to night so I’ll be wearing the dress a lot. Then the accessories work so well with the outfits so I’ll change things up by wearing the headband and putting on a scarf. It mixes and matches beautifully. I have to say I can’t wait to sleep under the beautiful reversible doona that also depicts my art.

How would you explain Taking Shape to someone who’s never shopped there?
I would say this clothing label caters for everyone. With sizes 10 to 30, there will always be something any woman can wear. They cater for women who like individuality and style and they use beautiful materials and gorgeous colours in all the clothing ranges.
