Who is Deborah Gates?

We’re so excited to introduce you to Deborah Gates, also found on instagram @deborahgates_ a stylist who is the Queen of layering and loves creating outfits that celebrate individuality. We also learnt she is a Nickelback fan and adores Moira and David, her style icons from Schitt’s Creek TV series.

Tell us about yourself

I’m a stylist who works with clients and across social media. I love working with women who really want to discover their personal style, they don’t want to copy anyone else, they want to discover what feels right for them.

What is your top styling tip?

My top styling tip would be just try things, if you think it might work try it, if you’re not sure it’s going to work, try it, and just be confident to be yourself.

What is your style story?

I don’t like to describe my style as one look - there are elements, the colour black, layering, alternate styles and I think they all play into my personal style.

What’s your favourite style?

I love layering, it’s how we make a look our own. For me it’s always about getting the proportions right for your body, and we are all different. So when I’m layering multiple pieces, I’m thinking about where the hemlines finish. What we want to do is create a beautiful fluid look. We don’t want the eye to stop, we want it to be up and down. That’s what I consider when I’m layering multiple pieces.

Wide Leg Pants

Wide leg pants are definitely a wardrobe staple for endless outfits. They feel relaxed but refined, creating long clean lines that work beautifully with simple knits and layered textures. A soft knit, a tucked in tee or an oversized shirt all pair back perfectly, making them an easy go to for everyday Winter outfits.

Dresses

Dresses don’t have to be packed away with the rest of your Summer wardrobe. Dresses are also a Winter go-to, especially to layer up or down depending on the day. Add boots, tights and a cosy knit or jacket and you have an outfit that works from morning to night with minimal thought.

Jackets

Jackets bring everything together, like the final layer that grounds the look. Whether tailored or softly structured, they add shape and polish without feeling heavy. A good Winter jacket becomes the piece you reach for again and again, tying every outfit back to that sense of ease.

What’s your go-to daily style?

Grab and go items, like the Natural Sadie Spliced Dress with some boots, some jewellery and I’m out the door. Something that has an irregular shape and is a little bit interesting.

What can’t you leave home without?

A red lip.

What would you tell someone who has never been to Taking Shape?

I find that there are many styles that work really well for me, I love the asymmetric lines, I like oversized styles, and I think the fact that Taking Shape now cater to size 10 means they are now doing clothes for everyone.

What’s your style story for Winter?

I’m very excited about all the textures so mixing things like your velours, and Ponte is a great fabric for Winter. Statement pieces are also a must, like the Madison Boiled Wool Coat. The military trend is also very cool and edgy so I’m really excited about that.

The Natural Halo Ponte Dress

The Natural Halo Ponte Dress is a must have piece for your wardrobe. It’s a beautiful tulip shape. You can layer under it and over it. You can even wear it over pants. It’s definitely a must have for my wardrobe this season.

The Ponte Harper Wide Leg Pant

Wide legs are trending again this season. You can’t go past a striped long sleeve tee and a gorgeous longline denim jacket. A fantastic look for casual weekends and lunches out with the girls.

The Military Jacket

I’m very excited about the velour Military Jacket. It’s such a fantastic statement piece and the military look is really trending this season. It’s a piece you can dress up or down. Wear it out to dinner or to lunch with the girls, or wear it to the market with jeans on the weekend.
