CELEBRATING THE SISTERHOOD OF MOTHERHOOD

At Taking Shape we know it takes a village to raise a child. Whether it’s Grandparents, Aunty’s, Friends and Family we couldn’t do it without the support of the Sisterhood. To celebrate this we were joined by sister’s Krizia and Olympia and their children. They both shared their very different Motherhood stories, and of course showcased some absolutely fabulous new season’s Taking Shape fashion, perfect for Mums on-the-go.

KRIZIA, LEO & CHLOE

Krizia was one of the first in her friendship group to have babies. Being the newbies, with no experience, there wasn’t an instant group of Mums in her friendship circle, but luckily her Mum and Mother-in-Law were able to help with guidance and support. When her daughter Chloe was 4 months old and Leo her son was 3 and a half years old and during Covid, Krizia went from being a married Mum to a single Mum. Her marriage was over and it was a difficult time.

“I had lots of support from my girlfriends and family. From selling our house to moving and adapting to being the only adult in the house. It was quite a lonely time and the kids going to and from it meant lots of adjustments.”

Support is everything.

“Having friends on the weekend when I didn’t have the kids kept me sane. The community outside my family was always there for me and the kids. Having a really supportive family on both sides, helped with pickups and drop offs while I continued to adjust to being a single Mum. It was also great for the kids to have a strong family network to support them.”

What do you love about being a Mum?

I love watching my kids grow up and remembering being their ages and recreating memories that I had as a kid with my parents with them. From the day they were born you meet them for the first time and you have no idea who they are and what they’re going to be like. It’s a surprise every time they hit a new milestone. They can be chalk and cheese and completely different. Their personalities grow as they turn into very different humans. So different, yet so alike in quirky ways. It’s endless entertainment. Leo and Chloe remind me of my sister Olympia and I when we were little. It’s like going back in time with your own children.”

How is it being a new Zia?

“It’s so exciting being a Zia to my sister Olympia’s first child Vincenzo. He is the best bundle of joy. It was nerve wracking the day he was born, waiting for the call to say he was out and happy and all good. It was pure joy and relief. I was so excited I went to the hospital for a sneaky first cuddle without the kids. When we first went in as a family the kids couldn’t believe he was here. Leo was amazed at how little his hands were and Chloe wouldn’t let him go. She was a little Mother Hen. Now I understand the connection that my sister has to my kids. I understand how it comes so easily, as he’s like my kid. There’s a definite Zia connection. We are all one family who love and support each other.”

Everybody’s experience is different

“It’s been huge watching my sister become a Mum. She’s always been the Aunty, the supporter, and now the shoes on the other foot and she’s entered Motherhood. It’s nice to see her grow into that role and take it on in her way. I’m really proud of her because she was really adamant about what she did and didn’t want and had realistic expectations going into the birthing side of things and afterwards. Everybody’s experience is so different and unique. You’re going in blind, but she’s found her feet really quickly and is doing an amazing job. We grew up with close relationships with our cousins and family, now it’s nice that the next generation will get to experience the same closeness.”

“You can hear all the stories and experiences, read all the books and listen to all the podcasts but nothing can prepare you for what’s going to happen on the other side of birthing a baby."

OLYMPIA & VINCENZO

Olympia is a first time Mum to baby Vincenzo born in January. She is adjusting to the amazing, crazy, weird and surreal world of new Motherhood and she was able to join us at the Taking Shape studio when Vincenzo was just over 2 weeks old, which we think is pretty amazing too!

Being a new older Mum

“I feel like I’m one of the last to do it, that makes it more surreal. I’ve always wanted to be a Mum and now I’m a thirty-five year old new Mum. My sister and friends had kids so I’ve seen the process and now it’s my turn and it’s nice to have the support around me.”

I’ve upgraded from Zia to Mum.

“My nephew, Leo and niece, Chloe are the lights of my life. Seeing them with Vincenzo melts my heart. They are the perfect trio. I feel like they are my children anyway. It’s nice to have older cousins who are attentive, especially Chloe who has a real life baby doll now. She is learning all the Mum things. I was a lot younger when my nephew Leo was born so I was around but not understanding the ins and outs. Now with Krizia being the Aunty she gets it and can anticipate what I need or want and just be there.”

There’s nothing that can prepare you.

“It’s not until you experience it that you know how crazy it is, especially with recovery. I was induced and had a C-section. Then breastfeeding with these big boobs that you hope will work and let you feed, but it’s not as simple as that either, it’s been a real challenge. I loved being pregnant, I loved feeling him in my belly. Every time I see a baby bump I cry now. Whatever you do don’t wish it away because on the other side it’s hard in the best way. Now it’s a whole new challenge compared to when you first fell pregnant. It’s the unknown in a good way.”

The Support Crew.

“All the women and men around you, who love and support you, are the real MVPs. Liam, my partner, was my saving grace in labour and in hospital. I would not have been able to do it without him. You need a village, your sister’s, Zias, Nonna’s and Nannas to help support you through all the new experiences that Motherhood brings.”

Krizia and Olympia share their absolutely fabulous style for Mums on-the-go.

Olympia says you can still look good in new Motherhood.

“Taking Shape got me through, from anti-chafe under dresses in summer to nighties in hospital, and now the button up booby feeding dresses. The great thing is the versatile styles can see you through antenatal and postnatal.”

Krizia’s top fashion tips for busy Mums

“When you’re time poor, capsule wardrobes are your go-to. Mix and match, easy-wear, easy-care pieces are perfect for Mum’s on-the-go. You still want to look stylish in the school yard but you don’t want to spend hours curating outfits.”

“Being a working Mum, you need a wardrobe that works for the office, the school drop off and for the weekend.”

“Make sure you have key pieces that you can dress up and down. I’m lucky my work environment at Taking Shape is not too corporate so I can have fun with fashion that makes it easier to mix and match clothes from weekdays to weekends.”
